Each February, the American Dental Association (ADA) along with the ADA Foundation, sponsors National Children's Dental Health Month to help raise awareness of the importance of good dental health in children.

During February, our Albuquerque pediatric dentists along with dental professionals across the country focus on promoting the benefits of good oral health to children, their parents, guardians and teachers.

The 2016 slogan for National Children's Dental Health Month is “Sugar Wars”. This year an emphasis will be put on teaching kids and their caregivers effective ways to defeat the negative effects of sugar on teeth and how to maintain good oral health through proper brushing, flossing, rinsing and eating healthy snacks.

Tips for Teaching Kids Good Oral Health Habits

This is a good time of the year to remind parents of how important it is to teach kids to take good care of their teeth. Here are a few tips that can help you teach your kids good oral health habits to help them maintain healthy teeth and gums.

Show Your Children How to Properly Brush & Floss

It's important to teach your kids how to properly brush and floss their teeth. A great way to do this is to brush and floss your teeth with your kids. Of course, very young children will need help brushing and flossing so be sure to assist your young child. There are many free smartphone and tablet apps you can download that makes learning how to care for teeth fun. There are also many books on the subject so consider visiting your local library with your child to choose a book or two that teaches good oral health habits.

Encourage Healthy Eating

The most common snacks for kids are cavity-causing snacks like candies and cookies. Focus on providing your child with healthy snacks like fresh veggies, low-fat yogurt and cheese which all help promote strong teeth. Teach your kids that sugary snacks are bad for their teeth and set a good example by only eating healthy foods and snacks yourself.

Make Seeing the Dentist Fun

It's important to schedule regular visits for your child at our dental office. When you talk about seeing the dentist, only speak positively and avoid saying things like “shots” and “drills”. Our team specializes in working with children and our office is very child-friendly. We have many kid-friendly amenities including a playroom with basketball and Disney movies. We want your child to be excited about visiting the dentist so getting the dental care he/or she needs is a positive experience and not something to fear.
